Fourth-quarter comeback lifts BSC past Hendrix, 7-5
CONWAY, Ark.—Scoring three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team picked up a 7-5 victory on the road today against conference rival Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.
BSC moves to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while Hendrix falls to 7-7 overall and is also 3-2 in the SAA now.
The Panthers scored the first two goals of the game, with sophomores Harris Oates and Austin Hafdell putting BSC up 2-0 by the 4:55 mark of the first quarter. Hendrix tied it up with two goals in the last four minutes, however, and then pulled ahead with a goal early in the second quarter.
Back-to-back Oates goals put BSC back in the lead, 4-3, before halftime.
The Warriors scored the only two goals of the third quarter to pull back ahead for the third lead change of the day, before the Panthers scored three in the fourth quarter while holding Hendrix scoreless for the 7-5 win. Sophomore Evan Lalande found the back of the net at the 10:41 mark to tie it up 5-5 before senior Peter Raffanti scored the go-ahead and game-winning goal at the 7:53 mark. Sophomore Luke Herline added an insurance goal for BSC with 5:09 left in the game.
Oates led with three goals, freshman Thomas Grove led with seven ground balls, and senior Brad Cooper led with five caused turnovers. Grove also led with five face-off wins. Junior goalkeeper Conor Perine played all 60 minutes in the net and made six saves.
The Panthers are at home tomorrow for the final home game of the regular season, hosting Methodist University at noon for Senior Day.
