BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Brevard College on Saturday afternoon, earning a 19-7 victory in the opening game of the season.
The Panthers scored early and often, never falling behind the Tornados in the match. Senior Justin Dennis (Buford, Ga./McCallie School) opened up the scoring with 9:34 to go in the first period. Dennis's opening goal was the first of five for the Panthers in the first period, and BSC would tack on five more in the second period to give the home team a 10-5 lead at halftime.
Head coach Casey Kear's squad continued to outscore the Tornados in the second half. The Panthers scored six goals in the third period to give them a 16-6 lead after 45 minutes and added three more in the fourth to give them the final 19-7 lead.
Birmingham-Southern was led by juniors Payton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) and Greg Wallace (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy) who had four goals each. Wallace also led the team in groundballs with four.
Sophomores Braden McCombs (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS), Taylor Carson (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS and Carson Buckner (Lucas, Texas/Lovejoy HS), and junior Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) all had two assists each.
Birmingham-Southern's next game will be on the road at Washington College in Chestertown, Md. on Saturday, Feb. 17.
