MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team improved to 5-2 on the year on Wednesday night, traveling to Huntingdon and taking down the rival Hawks 9-5.
BSC opened up the scoring with a Carter Watkins (Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell HS) goal 40 seconds into the game. The Panthers added to their lead with three goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.
Birmingham-Southern outscored Huntingdon again in the second half 5-4 to secure the final 9-5 victory.
The freshman Watkins led the Panthers on offense with three goals. Junior Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) played a part in four BSC goals with two goals and two assists.
Goalie Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) finished the game with eight saves.
BSC and Huntingdon compete each year for the Yellowhammer Trophy, a sledgehammer given to the winner of the annual series. With the win on Wednesday, the Panthers have won the last four matchups.
Birmingham-Southern's next game will be at home on Sunday, March 11 when Concordia (Wisc.) comes to the Hilltop. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
