BREVARD, N.C. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team opened its 2019 campaign with a big win over Brevard College on Saturday afternoon, blowing past the Tornados 21-5.
The Panthers got off to a hot start, outscoring the home team 6-1 in the first period of play. BSC outscored the Tornados in each period, including an eight-goal third period that gave the Panthers a commanding 16-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Senior Peyton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) and Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) led the Panthers in scoring with four goals each. Sophomore Carter Watkins (Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell HS) led the team in assists with four.
Senior Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) got the start between the pipes and recorded four saves. He was relieved after 19 minutes by Zachary Mathews (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS), who played 26 minutes and also picked up four saves.
Birmingham-Southern returns to the Hilltop for its next game on Friday, Feb. 17 against Southwestern. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
