BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Courtesy of a hat trick by senior Tyler Evans and two goals by freshman Tobias Winter, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 9-0 victory against Blackburn College in game two of the 2011 Jim 'n Nick's/PUMA Labor Day Classic.
Senior Tony Crocker got the scoring started in the ninth minute off an assist from senior Sean Head, and the Panthers went up 2-0 less than two minutes later when Evans scored his first goal of the game at the 10:06 mark, assisted by freshman Tobias Winter.
In the 18th minute, Evans found the back of the net again, and Winter put BSC up 4-0 in the 22nd minute (with his first collegiate goal), courtesy of an assist from Crocker. Freshman Armann Gunnlaugsson also scored his first collegiate goal in the 38th minute, assisted by sophomore Brynjar Arnason, to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead at the half.
Evans scored his third goal in the 53rd minute, assisted by sophomore Brooks Busby, and Winter scored again in the 64th minute, assisted by Crocker, putting the Panthers up 7-0.
Sophomore defender Cory Gonzalez scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute off an assist from Arnason, and junior defender Nathan Haywood also scored his first goal in the 83rd minute (also assisted by Arnason) to wrap up the scoring.
Sophomore Sveinbo Grimsson started in goal for BSC and played 51 minutes before being replaced by sophomore Alex Levinson, who played 29 minutes. Freshman Ian Rone came in for the remaining nine minutes.
Evans led the team with six of its 30 shots; Blackburn recorded only one shot in the game.
Earlier in the day, in game one of the Classic, Mississippi College defeated Sewanee on a penalty kick, 1-0, after a foul committed inside the box.
Action continues on Sunday as Sewanee takes on Blackburn at noon and BSC faces Mississippi College at 2:30 p.m., both at BSC Soccer Park.
