Panthers fall to Methodist on the road, 3-1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—After scoring early in the game, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team gave up three straight goals to fall to Methodist University, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Fall Classic.

The Panthers fall to 1-2-1, while the Monarchs move to 4-1.

Senior Armann Gunnlaugsson scored BSC's lone goal of the game in the sixth minute off an assist from junior Tobias Winter, and held the 1-0 lead until the 30th minute when Methodist's Eric McGinnis scored off an assist from Miguel Flores to knot the score at 1-1.

The tie stood until the 72nd minute, when Methodist found the net again on an unassisted goal by Eirik Nordseth. The Monarchs scored again eight minutes later with an unassisted goal by Anders Petersen, and the Panthers were unable to score again before time expired.

Senior Sveinbo Grimsson started in goal for BSC and played 75 minutes, making four saves. Junior Alex Levinson came in for the final 15 minutes and recorded two saves.

The Monarchs out-shot the Panthers 22-12, 9-5 on-goal. Sophomore Cory Gonzalez led BSC with four shots, while McGinnis led Methodist with seven.

The Panthers are on the road again next weekend, traveling to Greenville, Pa., to face Medaille on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. CT, and Adrian on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. CT in two neutral-site games hosted by Thiel College.
