MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Panther men's soccer team traveled to Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday and opened Southern Athletic Association play with a 3-1 win against Rhodes College.
The win moves BSC to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the SAA; Rhodes falls to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
BSC took to the scoreboard in the 19th minute when junior Brynjar Arnarson assisted junior Brooks Busby, who received the ball just inside the 18-yard box and tucked it into the near post.
The Panthers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute. This time, Arnason scored off a long shot from senior Emil Saevarsson from the left side that soared over the Rhodes keeper to the back post.
Rhodes would not be denied a goal before the half as they headed in a crossed ball from the right side in the 43rd minute.
The score remained 2-1 until the 89th minute when sophomore Ryan Deveikis won a ball in the midfield and sent a precision headed ball through to junior Tobias Winter, who took the pass one-one-one with the Lynx keeper and finished the goal to the far post.
The Panthers are on the road again next weekend, traveling to face Sewanee on Friday, Oct. 5, at 5 p.m., and Centre on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. Eastern.
