Johannes Loeffler named SAA Men's Soccer Newcomer of the Year; eight Panthers earn All-Conference honors
ATLANTA, Ga.—Freshman midfielder Johannes Loeffler was named Southern Athletic Association Newcomer of the Year, and eight Birmingham-Southern men's soccer players were named to the All-Conference Teams, the league office announced today.
Junior forward Tobias Winter (Giessen, Germany) and junior defender Cory Gonzalez (Birmingham, Ala.) were named to the All-SAA First Team, while senior defender Nathan Haywood (Fairhope, Ala.) and junior midfielder Brooks Busby (Birmingham, Ala.) earned Second-Team honors. Loeffler, senior goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, sophomore defender Ryan Deveikis, and freshman midfielder Haraldur Birgisson (Kopavogur, Iceland) were all named All-SAA Honorable Mention as well.
Loeffler, a freshman from Giessen, Germany, used his versatility and skill in the midfield to help keep the Panthers undefeated in league play (3-0-4). With his help, the BSC offense ranked first in shots, second in goals, and second in assists this season. Loeffler also showed a preternatural ability to score, finding the back of the net twice and dishing two assists.
Winter ranked second in the SAA this season with five assists and fourth in goals (7) and points (19). Gonzalez helped the Panthers to five shutouts on the season while also scoring twice. Haywood also helped to anchor the defense while scoring one goal and recording one assist, and Busby had five goals for 10 points this season.
BSC went 6-5-6 overall in 2012 with a 3-0-4 mark in the SAA.
