ROME, Ga.—Berry's Josh Hughes scored five goals, all in the first half, to shut out the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team, Sunday afternoon at Ford Field in Rome, Ga.
The Panthers fall to 9-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Athletic Association; the Vikings move to 9-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the SAA for a three-way tie for first place in the standings with Oglethorpe and Millsaps.
Hughes' five goals—the third of which was a penalty kick—set a single-game record. He scored the first goal of the game in the third minute and the last goal with only six seconds remaining in the half.
The Panthers struggled on both offense and defense, as Berry out-shot them 16-1 (10-1 on-goal), including 7-0 in the second half. Junior Jonas Heidrich started in goal and recorded one save in 68 minutes; freshman Louis Fagelson came in for the remaining 18 minutes. The Panthers were also credited with four team saves.
BSC wraps up regular season play next weekend, taking on Millsaps on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
