COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team improved to 5-3-1 on the year with a 3-0 shutout of the Mississippi University for Women Owls on Sunday afternoon.
The first goal for the Panthers came in the 10th minute when junior midfielder Brother Swagler (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) slotted one past the MUW goalkeeper. Junior midfielder Brett Feringa (Covington, La./St. Paul's HS) had the assist.
Birmingham-Southern would go into halftime with the 1-0 lead and added its final two goals in the last 45 minutes.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Hepp (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS), off an assist from junior defender Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawatchee HS), scored his fifth goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Freshman midfielder Will Gannaway (Decatur, Ala./Decatur HS) capped the scoring in the 69th minute, giving the Panthers the final 3-0 lead over the Owls. Feringa assisted on the goal, his second of the match. The goal for Gannaway was the first of his collegiate career.
The Panthers outshot the Owls 18-7 and had six corners to MUW's one.
Birmingham-Southern returns home on Saturday, Sept. 30 for a match against Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes. The start for that match is scheduled for 4:30 P.M.
