BSC Earns 3-1 Road Win at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team defeated Covenant 3-1 on Friday night, improving to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 on the road.

The Panthers opened up the scoring early in the game in the fifth minute after senior defender Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) found the end of a Jackson Lynn (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) free kick and beat the Covenant goalkeeper.

The goal was Hambleton's third of the season.

It would not take long, however, for the Scots to tie the match back up. One minute after Hambleton's goal, the home team equalized when Jesse Riggs's cross into the box found Mercer Stout.

The two teams remained locked at 1-1 until the 42nd minute when freshman forward Christian Hernandez (Ft. Payne, Ala./Ft. Payne HS), the team's leading scorer, scored the go-ahead goal, taking control of his own rebounded shot to beat the goalkeeper.

BSC would take the 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers final goal would come courtesy of a Scots defender when a ball deflected off him and into his own goal. The 61st minute own goal gave BSC the 3-1 lead and capped the scoring in the match.

Senior goalkeeper Galen Curry (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) recorded the win to improve his record to 4-1. He finished the match with six saves.

Birmingham-Southern will host Emory on the Hilltop in its next game on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Kickoff for the match against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m.
