BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team put on a scoring clinic in a 7-1, conference-opening rout of Southern Athletic Association foe Hendrix on Saturday night.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-2-1 and 1-0 in the SAA.
BSC scored early and often against the Warriors with the first goal coming off the foot of freshman forward Christian Hernandez (Ft. Payne, Ala./Ft. Payne HS) in the third minute. Hernandez would go on to assist on two other goals before the final whistle.
Junior midfielder Ryan Hepp (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) and sophomore Corby Groark (Huntsville, Ala./Saint Paul John II HS) would score BSC's two other first-half goals in the 27th and 30th minutes, respectively, to give the Panthers the 3-1 lead at the half.
Both Hepp and Groark would add assists in the second half, as well.
Four different Panthers scored in the second half. Senior defender Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) opened up the scoring the final 45 minutes. Sophomore Will Gannaway (Decatur, Ala./Decatur HS), senior Brother Swagler (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) and junior Jackson Lynn (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) scored the final three goals for the Panthers to give them the final 7-1 lead.
A dominant performance on the field, BSC outshot Hendrix 20-8 with 10 of its shots on-goal.
Birmingham-Southern will look to keep the momentum from the win going into its next match, a home contest against MUW on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Kickoff for the game is slated for 7 p.m. following the completion of the BSC women's soccer game.
