BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2019 season on Friday night, taking a 1-0 decision against Gordon College at Preston Goldfarb Field.
Birmingham-Southern (1-2-0) and Gordon (1-1-1) fought a physical battle, but it was the home side that came away the victors thanks to a first-half goal that would prove to be the game-winner.
Freshman forward Coleman Jennings (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) was the hero for the Panthers on Friday, scoring his first collegiate goal off his own rebounded shot to give BSC the early 1-0 lead it needed to secure the win. The goal, which came in the fourth minute, was assisted on a through ball by senior forward Jackson Lynn (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS).
The Panthers held on to their slim lead for the remaining 76 minutes. Three yellow cards were issued in the second half.
In the match, Gordon managed more shots, 13-11, but BSC had five shots on goal to Gordon's two.
Senior goalkeeper Kurt Moore (Euharlee, Ga./Darlington School) ended the game with two saves and improved his record to 1-2-0 on the year.
Birmingham-Southern will look to continue its winning ways at Emory on Sunday, Sept. 8. The Panthers and Eagles will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
