BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team defeated Rhodes College 3-1 at Preston Goldfarb Field on Saturday evening, keeping the Panthers perfect in Southern Athletic Association play.
After a deadlocked first half which sent the two teams into the break tied at 1-1, BSC found two goals in the final 45 minutes to secure its second conference win of the 2019 campaign.
The first two goals of the match came early. BSC opened up the scoring in the fifth minute when sophomore Christian Hernandez (Fort Payne, Ala./Fort Payne HS) found freshman Alessandro Junior (Novo Horizonte, Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the box for an easy tap-in goal. The goal was Junior's second of the season.
Two minutes later, Rhodes responded with a goal of its own. A cross into the Panthers' box found Travis Tuerff, who put it away for the equalizer.
Tied up at the half, the winner would be decided in the second half.
In the 70th minute, Hernandez, who assisted on BSC's first goal, was rewarded with a goal of his own. Linking up with Coleman Jennings (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS), Hernandez grabbed his fifth goal of the season and what would prove to be the game-winner for the Panthers on Saturday.
But the 70th-minute goal would not be the last of Hernandez. The sophomore added another assist to the scoresheet on an 89th-minute insurance goal by senior forward Jackson Lynn (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS).
Lynn's goal would cap the scoring and secure the 3-1 win for the home side.
BSC outshot Rhodes 16 to 13 in the match and had 11 shots on goal to the Lynx's two. Senior goalkeeper Kurt Moore (Eurharlee, Ga./Darlington School) finished the match with one save.
With the win, Birmingham-Southern improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference. The Panthers will travel to Oglethorpe for its next conference game on Friday, Oct. 11.
