ROME, Ga.--The Birmingham-Southern tennis teams traveled to Berry College today, where the men's team defeated the Vikings 8-1 but the women lost 6-3.
The men move to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. The women fall to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, losing their first match since the season opener on Feb. 20 against UAH.
For the men, the Panthers were victorious at every position but two singles. In doubles play, senior Sawyer Voges and junior Stewart Thrash combined at the top spot to win 8-0, while juniors Tony DaMaia and Christian Matthews won at two doubles, 8-5. Sophomore Brian Brandt and freshman Patrick Hire won in the third doubles position, 8-0.
In singles, Voges won in the number one spot, 7-6, 6-3, while Matthews lost at two singles 6-2, 7-6. Hire and DaMaia won at three and four, and junior Lance Mengel won at No. 5 singles and sophomore Ben Reardon won in the sixth position.
In women's action, BSC took two of three doubles matches, with junior Emily Holst and freshman Sara Cohen winning a thriller at two doubles, 9-8, and junior Terria Punturo and freshman Lindsay Farrell winning at three doubles, 8-6.
The Panthers won only one singles match, as Cohen was victorious at the third position, 6-4, 6-3.
The teams are in action again tomorrow, taking on Oglethorpe at 9 a.m. Eastern in Atlanta.
