BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—In an event pitting two teams ranked in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the No. 10 Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team fell to No. 16 Oglethorpe University, 5-4, Saturday morning at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
BSC drops to 9-3, breaking a five-match win streak, while Oglethorpe moves to 9-8. Both teams are now 3-1 in the Southern Athletic Association.
The Panthers started strong, claiming two of three matches in doubles play. BSC dropped the match at the top doubles position, but the pairing of sophomore Patrick Hire and freshman Alex Makarenko won at two doubles, moving to 10-1 on the season, and the tandem of juniors Brian Brandt and Ben Reardon claimed victory at three doubles, remaining undefeated at 10-0.
Singles play was not as kind to the home team as the only points came from Brandt at two singles and Makarenko at four singles. Brandt moves to 9-2 in singles play while Makarenko remains perfect at 12-0 on the season.
The team is at home again tomorrow, hosting SAA foe Berry College at 9 a.m.
