BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alex Makarenko (Sewanee, GA/ Peach Tree Ridge High School) is a recent graduate of Birmingham-Southern College. He played on the men's tennis team all four of his years on the Hilltop and is a three-time Southern Athletic Association All-Conference selection.
Makarenko wants to start working immediately after graduating with a degree in business. The Georgia native plans to move to either Atlanta or stay in Birmingham, setting himself up for success in the middle of two major business hubs.
Like so many that tour BSC, he fell in love with the school at first sight. The people were also a large influencing factor on his visit to the college.
"My dad had gone to school here, so I had an idea of what it was like," explained Makarenko. "When I came on my visit to the campus, I just really liked it and felt that it was the place for me. I really enjoyed my overnight visit."
Part of Makarenko's decision for coming to BSC was due to the tennis program. He was recruited to come and be a Panther.
Growing up, he worked as a tennis coach at different camps during the summer. He was also a summer intern at his father's law firm, Growth and Makarenko. His dad was also a Panther on the men's tennis team. One could say that Makarenko followed closely in his father's footsteps, while his younger brother followed in their mother's footsteps, and is currently attending Auburn University just as she did.
"I am definitely closer to my father in the sense that I grew up a Georgia fan because my dad went to law school at Georgia," he explained. "My brother grew up an Auburn fan like my mom."
As a kid, Makarenko competed in a little more than just tennis. "I played basketball, baseball, and golf," he added. "I've been playing golf my whole life and its really something I enjoy when I'm not on a court."
Makarenko said that his favorite childhood memory was making the eighth grade basketball team, because it was something that he really worked hard for and achieved. His life has been full of adventures in travel. Over the years, the family has taken several vacations to destinations including: Mexico, Canada, Germany and Austria. "I've been to Mexico four times," he added. "We have stayed in Cancun and just stayed at the beach and relaxed. In Canada, we went to the mountains that were amazing to see."
Along with being on the tennis team, Makarenko is involved on campus as a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.
