BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Junior Ronni Ferris pitched a perfect game today to help the Birmingham-Southern softball team get a doubleheader shutout of Sewanee to move to 17-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Panthers won game one 8-0 and game two 25-0, both in five innings.
It was the fourth perfect game in program history and second in Ferris' career after getting one last season against Rhodes on March 27, 2010.
The 25 runs scored in game two tie the single-game record, which was set last season on the road against Sewanee.
In the first game today, the Panthers recorded 12 hits, led by pitchers Ferris and junior Beth Lefler, who were both 3-of-3 at the plate. Sophomore Chelsea Fernandez was 2-of-2 with four RBI. Ferris (10-5) recorded 12 strikeouts in five innings of work.
In game two, BSC put 10 runs on the board in the first inning alone and posted 23 total hits, led by Ferris who was 4-of-4. She and senior Melissa Revis led with four RBI each. Junior Beth Lefler (7-2) got the win in the circle after giving up only one hit with seven strikeouts.
The Panthers and Tigers will square off again tomorrow in a noon doubleheader at BSC Softball Park.
