Softball defeats Huntingdon, Alabama A&M in BSC Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team picked up two more wins today to move to 4-0 on the season, defeating Huntingdon College, 3-2 in nine innings, and Alabama A&M, 6-0, on day one of the BSC Invitational.
The Hawks scored twice in the top of the third inning, and the Panthers cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly-out by junior Danielle Rucker. BSC tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on another sacrifice fly-out, this time from junior Brittany Berkopec, and the score remained tied at 2-2 at the end of seven innings.
The Panthers held Huntingdon scoreless in the top of the eighth, and then scored the game-winner - an RBI single from freshman Taylor Bassett - in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior Ronni Ferris started in the circle and threw five innings, giving up a hit with no earned runs before freshman Bethany Fronk came in for the final three innings. Fronk picked up the win after allowing a hit with four strikeouts.
Senior Ashley Bice led BSC at the plate, going 2-of-4.
In the nightcap against Alabama A&M, BSC scored three in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the fifth. Fronk led the Panthers at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, and she and Ferris each recorded two RBI. Senior Beth Lefler started on the circle and got the win, giving up only two hits in five innings with two strikeouts. Fronk came in for the final two innings and recorded three strikeouts.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m., facing Case Western Reserve at BSC Softball Park.
