Softball suffers first losses of season to Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team dropped a doubleheader to Covenant College today, suffering its first losses of the season.

The Panthers lost by the scores of 3-1 and 3-2, and fall to 6-2 on the season.

In the first game of the day, the Scots scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third and held BSC scoreless until the top of the seventh. With two outs on the board, freshman Taylor Bassett doubled and freshman Erin Lopez singled to left field, scoring Bassett for the Panthers' only run of the game.

Senior Ronni Ferris started in the circle and threw 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts to fall to 1-1 on the season. Freshman Bethany Fronk came in for the final 3.1 innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts.

BSC out-hit Covenant 10-4, led by Lopez who was 3-of-4 at the plate.

In game two, BSC got on the board quickly, scoring twice in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior Brittany Berkopec and a fielder's choice that let Berkopec score.

The Scots tied it up just as quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first, and the score remained knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Covenant hit a home run to go up 3-2. The Panthers were unable to score again in the game.

Senior Beth Lefler started in the circle for game two and threw one out of the first inning, giving up three hits and two earned runs before Ferris came in for the rest of the game. She allowed only one hit and one earned run, but it was the game-winner for the Scots and she took the loss to fall to 1-2.

BSC out-hit Covenant again, this time 7-4 and again led by Lopez who was 2-of-3 at the plate.

The Panthers travel to face Maryville College tomorrow in a noon doubleheader in Maryville, Tenn.
