Strong pitching helps Panthers defeat Centre twice at home
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Courtesy of stellar pitching performances from senior Ronni Ferris and freshman Bethany Fronk, the Birmingham-Southern softball team defeated Centre twice today at BSC Softball Park by the scores of 4-1 and 5-0.
The Panthers move to 21-5 overall and 9-1 in the SCAC, leading the East Division standings, while the Colonels fall to 8-15 overall and 1-5 in the league.
In the first game, BSC's first two runs came in the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI triple by junior Brittany Berkopec and an RBI single by senior Ronni Ferris. The Panthers went up 4-0 in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch and a sac-fly by Fronk. The Colonels scored a single run in the top of the sixth, but BSC held them scoreless for the seventh for the 4-1 win.
Ferris threw all seven innings, moving to 8-4 on the season after striking out 10 batters and giving up eight hits. Ferris and senior Ashley Bice led at the plate, both going 2-3; the Panthers recorded seven total hits.
In game two, BSC's first run was in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk. The Panthers would not score again until the fifth when an RBI single by senior Emily Merritt put them up 2-0. After a pitching change by the Colonels, with two outs on the board, the Panthers scored twice more on errors to go up 4-0. BSC added one more in the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Taylor Bassett.
Fronk pitched the complete game to move to 9-0 on the year, recording six strikeouts and giving up five hits. Berkopec went 2-2 at the plate, while Bice was 2-4.
The four-game conference series concludes tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader. Seniors Bice, Ferris, Merritt, and Beth Lefler will be honored during pregame festivities.
