PULASKI, Tenn. -- Birmingham-Southern softball (1-1) split a doubleheader with Martin Methodist (1-1) to open the 2013 season on Saturday. The Panthers rallied for a 5-4 win in game one before dropping a 1-0 decision in game two.
The Panthers used a five run fourth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit in game one. Deanna Creps' two-run double cut the deficit to one and Joanna Jernigan got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. Brittany Berkopec, who went 2-for-3, delivered a two-RBI single to put the Panthers in front 5-3.
Martin Methodist scored a run in the seventh to cut the BSC lead to 5-4 and had the tying run at second, before ending the game on a ground out.
Bethany Fronk pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, to earn the game one win. Caroline Ezell was the pitcher of record for the Redhawks, giving up four runs with a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
Martin Methodist captured game two 1-0. Creps (0-1) made her debut in the circle for the Panthers, posting three strikeouts while allowing an unearned run over six innings.
The Panthers welcome Maryville for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
