MONTGOMERY – After an almost two-week layoff, the Birmingham-Southern softball (5-1) team returned by sweeping a doubleheader from Huntingdon College (0-6) by the scores of 8-2 and 8-4 Friday at the Huntingdon Softball complex.
Bethany Front went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Taylor Bassett was also 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Panthers in game one.
The game was tied 1-1 into the third inning before the Panthers scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Bassett singled home the first run and Fronk delivered a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Huntingdon cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning before BSC scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth an another run in the sixth. Alyssa Statham belted a home run to right field in the fourth. Deanna Creps walked and scored on a wild pitch and Brittany Berkopec had an RBI double in the fifth. Bassett homered to left in the sixth to give BSC an 8-2 lead.
Fronk pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and allowed two runs, one earned on three hits to earn the win to improve to 3-0.
Melissa McClure (0-3) gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts as the pitcher of record for Huntingdon.
In game two, the Panthers scored two in the first, four in the fifth and two in the sixth and then survived a three-run sixth for the 8-4 win.
Statham got the Panthers off and going with a two-run home run in top of the first before the Hawks cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
Joanna Jernigan singled and scored on a Rucker single and Bassett hit a three-run home to push the lead to 6-1 in the fifth.
In the two-run sixth, Rucker had an RBI single to score Karley Chamblee and Jernigan scored on a Statham sac-fly.
Huntingdon scored three in the bottom of the sixth and had another run at third when Fronk got Kaetlen Brown to ground out.
Fronk got the win in relief of starter Deanna Creps to improve to 4-0. Fronk allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Creps pitched three innings allowing one run on four hits.
Ashley Hawkins took the loss for the Hawks in game two, giving up five runs on seven hits to fall to 0-1.
Birmingham-Southern returns to the diamond on Saturday and Sunday in the 3N2 Elite Event hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. The Panthers play Emory at 9 a.m. and Roanoke at 11 a.m. on Saturday and will play Roanoke at 9 a.m. and Emory at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
