BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Millsaps College (8-3; 2-0 SAA) swept a Southern Athletic Association softball doubleheader from Birmingham-Southern (5-7; 0-2 SAA) by the scores of 7-4 and 13-5 Saturday at the BSC Softball Park.
The Majors scored a run in the second and added three runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 7-1 advantage before the Panthers cut the lead to 7-4 with a three-run fifth.
Danielle Rucker had a one-out single to start the rally and advanced to third on a Statham double. Rucker scored on a Taylor Bassett sac-fly. Bethany Fronk doubled advancing Statham to third and both scored on a Deanna Creps single to center field.
Statham led the Panthers at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Fronk was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Creps had two RBI while going 2-for-4. Joanna Jernigan was 2-for-3 while Berkopec, Rucker, Elizabeth Ballew and Chelsea Fernandez each had a hit.
In game two, the Panthers held a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Fronk had a two-run single and Bassett had an RBI single to highlight the inning.
Millsaps scored six in the second and added one in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth for its run total in game two.
Bassett tripled and scored on a throwing error in the third and Ballew had an RBI double in the fifth for BSC.
Statham and Bassett each had two hits and scored two runs to lead BSC in game two.
Fronk took the loss in the circle for the Panthers in both games to fall to 4-5 while Molly Tyner improved to 4-1 as the pitcher of record for Millsaps in both games.
BSC and Millsaps close out the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m.
