ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Southern Athletic Association announced the softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for games played March 11-17 and Taylor Bassett of Birmingham-Southern won the Player award while teammate Bethany Fronk earned the Pitcher of the Week honor.
Softball Player of the Week - Taylor Bassett of Birmingham-Southern
Taylor Bassett (pictured making leaping grab) helped BSC to a 6-0 week that included a four-game sweep of Centre College over the weekend. The Panthers also extended their win streak to eight games and are now 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the SAA. Bassett hit .667 going 10-for-15 with 11 runs scored, five home runs, two doubles and nine RBI. She had a 1.800 slugging percentage and a .783 on base percentage while drawing seven walks with no strikeouts. The Orlando, Fla., native went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI double in a 8-2 win in game one against Covenant and she was 2-for-4 with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored in game two versus CC. In the Centre series, Bassett went 5-for-6 with eight runs scored, five RBI, a double and two home runs six times, two intentionally, with no strikeouts. In game one on Saturday, Bassett was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs and four RBI to lead BSC to a 10-0 win and she was 0-for-1 with a walk and run scored in game two. On Sunday, Bassett was 0-for-1 and was walked three times and scored twice in a 5-3 game one win over Centre and she was 2-for-2 with two runs scored a double, a home run, an RBI and was walked two times in the 5-4 game two win.
Softball Pitcher of the Week- Bethany Fronk of Birmingham-Southern
Bethany Fronk went 5-0 this week with three complete games in the circle for Birmingham-Southern and is 7-0 during BSC's eight game winning streak that has the Panthers 6-0 in the SAA and 13-7 overall. Fronk had a 1.35 ERA in five appearances and three starts, while hurling 26 innings with 16 strikeouts, five walks and yielding six runs, five earned this week. The Clay, Ala., native tossed a complete game in a 8-2 win over Covenant, posting six strikeouts while giving up two runs, one earned on eight hits. She tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout in relief to pick up the game two win over Covenant, 12-8. Fronk tossed a six inning complete game two hit shutout with three strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Centre on Saturday. Fronk pitched 4.2 innings in relief in a 4-3 game two win, allowing one run on two hits. On Sunday, Fronk struck out six batters and gave up three runs on seven hits in a complete game 5-3 game one win.
