PINEVILLE, La.--The Birmingham-Southern softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Louisiana College, both by one run, Thursday evening at Coca-Cola Field in Pineville, La.
The Panthers lost game one 3-2, and lost in the nightcap 5-4. BSC falls to 13-9, while the Wildcats move to 13-4.
A two-run home run by sophomore Taylor Bassett put BSC on the board in the top of the first inning of the first game. The Panthers gave up a run in the bottom of the first, and held the 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Louisiana College plated two runs to take a 3-2 lead. BSC wasn't able to get on base after that, giving the Wildcats the 3-2 victory.
Bassett was 1-3 at the plate with two RBI, while sophomore Bethany Fronk was 2-3. Fronk also threw the complete game, giving up eight hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts to fall to 11-6 on the season.
In game two, the Panthers got off to another fast start, scoring three in the top of the first on an RBI single from Bassett, an RBI double from sophomore Alyssa Statham, and a run scored on an error by Lousiana College. The bottom of the fourth proved productive again for the Wildcats, however, as they scored five runs - one on an RBI single, two on a BSC error, and two more on another RBI single.
The Panthers were able to cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth courtesy of a Fronk RBI single, but BSC couldn't score in the final two innings.
Statham was 3-4 at the plate for BSC, and Bassett was 2-4. Freshman Deanna Creps started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run before Fronk came in for the final 2.2 innings and gave up two hits to take the loss and fall to 11-7.
The Panthers are off until next weekend when they continue Southern Athletic Association action at home against Sewanee with doubleheaders on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, both at noon at BSC Softball Park.
