CONWAY, Ark.--Sophomore Taylor Bassett hit her 21st career home run today to break the Birmingham-Southern softball career record and help the Panthers sweep Hendrix, 2-1 and 7-4, at Warrior Field in Conway, Ark.
The pair of wins moves the Panthers to 22-10 on the season and a conference-leading 13-3 in Southern Athletic Association action. BSC wins the series against Hendrix, 3-1, after yesterday's split which saw the Panthers' conference win streak end at 11.
In game one, Panther scoring started in the second inning when Fronk led off the inning with a double to right-center. Four batters later she was brought home by an RBI single from sophomore Joanna Jernigan.
The Panthers would add another run in the top of the fourth off an RBI from senior Chelsea Fernandez that scored freshman Katelyn Murray. The two runs would be enough for Fronk, who only surrendered a run while earning the complete game victory, to improve to 16-8 on the season.
Game two saw more scoring action, as the Panthers opened with three runs in the first courtesy of an RBI double down the left-field line from sophomore Taylor Bassett, an RBI single to left-center from sophomore Alyssa Statham, and an RBI double from Murray.
Hendrix tied it up in the bottom of the first, but BSC broke the tie in the third when Bassett led off with a home run to left field, her 14th of the year and the 21st of her career. Bassett's name now tops the list in the BSC records book for career and single-season home runs. Both records were previously held by Nikki Rombough, who played from 2002-2006.
The Warriors tied it up again in the bottom of the third with a single run, but the Panthers added another three in the top of the sixth courtesy of an RBI double from Jernigan and a two-RBI double from Statham.
Fronk threw the complete game again, moving to 17-8 on the year after giving up 10 hits and four earned runs with one strikeout in seven innings of work.
The Panthers return home next weekend for the final home games of the year, hosting Berry College in a four-game series with noon doubleheaders on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, at BSC Softball Park.
