MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The Birmingham-Southern softball team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday, dropping two games to Rhodes College in Memphis. The Panthers lost the first game 8-0 in five innings, and the second game 3-2 in 10 innings.
BSC falls to 24-16 overall and 15-9 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Lynx move to 24-13 overall and 17-6 in league play, clinching the two-seed in next weekend's SAA Championship hosted by Centre. The Panthers will play as the third seed, facing sixth-seeded Hendrix at noon Eastern on Friday in Danville, Ky.
In game one, Rhodes scored seven in the first inning alone and added one more in the fifth. The Panthers only managed one hit in the game, a single to left field by senior Brittany Berkopec in the second inning.
Sophomore Bethany Fronk threw 4.2 innings for BSC, giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs with three strikeouts before the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.
Game two was a different story for both teams, as the Panthers got on the board early with an RBI single from sophomore Taylor Bassett. Rhodes tied it up in the bottom of the first, and then BSC took its first lead of the day in the top of the third with a Berkopec RBI single. The Lynx tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with a one-run home run.
The game went to extra innings and Rhodes was able to capitalize in the bottom of the 10th with a walk-off single to score the game-winning run.
Rhodes had 12 hits, double that of BSC. Bassett was 2-4 at the plate and senior Danielle Rucker was 2-5. Freshman Deanna Creps started in the circle and went one inning, giving up three hits and one earned run with one strikeout. Fronk finished the game and allowed nine hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. She finishes the regular season with an 18-12 record.
