DEMOREST, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team opened the season on the road Sunday and dropped two games to Piedmont, losing 7-3 and 5-4 at Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest, Ga.
In the first game, Piedmont scored two in the bottom of the first, including one run scored on a BSC error. The Lions added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple from Laura Carter, and then three more in the bottom of the third to go up 6-0. The Panthers got on the board in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly-out by junior Alyssa Statham and an RBI double from freshman Torrie Garner, but Piedmont answered with another run in the bottom of the sixth on another Carter RBI triple to pull ahead 7-2. BSC wrapped up the scoring in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from freshman Hannah Harris.
Junior Bethany Fronk took the loss in the circle after giving up 10 hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Garner led the Panthers at the plate going 2-3.
BSC found their bats earlier in the second game, scoring twice in the top of the second, both on sacrifice fly-outs. The first was by freshman Taylor Brewer and the second was by Fronk. The Panthers went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple by freshman Maddie Ridgway, but the Lions took over the lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. BSC tied it up in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Harris, but Piedmont pulled ahead again in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to go up 5-4. BSC was unable to get on base in the final two innings, and the Lions picked up the victory.
Fronk took the loss in game two as well, dropping to 0-2 after allowing five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts in three innings. Sophomore Deanna Creps started in the circle, and freshman Taylor Harkins also saw time pitching. Ridgway was 2-4 at the plate to lead the Panthers.
BSC is on the road again next weekend, traveling to Nashville to face Trevecca Nazarene in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The Panthers will open their home slate on Friday, Feb. 28, hosting Faulkner in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the BSC Softball Park.
