BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Riding a four-game win streak, the Birmingham-Southern softball team hopes to take the momentum into the Southern Athletic Association Tournament this weekend. The Panthers (21-16, 8-8 SAA) are seeded fourth and open against fifth seed Hendrix College at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 21.
"We've been playing good," said Head Coach Kimball Cassady. "It's anyone's game at conference and I believe we have a chance to prove a lot of people wrong."
BSC has been led offensively by Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS), Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS), and Savannah Lee (Lascassas, Tenn./Oakland HS). Crumpton, a dual-threat, leads the team in hits and has a team-low 1.52 ERA with a team-best 93 strikeouts. She ranks nationally in 17 different categories including 11th in shutouts and 18th in RBI.
Spencer has a team-best .409 batting average. She ranks nationally in six different categories, including on base percentage and walks, where she leads the league. Power hitter Lee, is nationally ranked in 15 categories including first in home runs (16) and second in slugging percentage (.931). The first baseman was named national player of the week earlier this year. She leads the league in five categories.
Crumpton has helped anchor the Panthers pitching staff along with senior Taylor Harkins (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook HS). The righty has started 26 of her 27 appearances and struck out 86 batters in 114.1 innings pitched. Harkins ranks nationally in six different categories including 29th in shutouts.
The Panthers swept their series against Hendrix earlier this season at home. Should they defeat the Warriors in the first round, they will take on regular season champs No. 3 Berry College Friday at 4 p.m.
The double elimination tournament is hosted by Sewanee this year and will be played in Chattanooga, Tenn. Fans can follow the tournament action at www.bscsports.net live all weekend long.
