SAA Tournament: Softball Splits First Day

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team used a big fourth inning to help propel them to an 8-1 win over Hendrix College in the first round of the 2017 Southern Athletic Association Tournament Friday, but then fell 9-3 to regular season champion No. 3 Berry College.  BSC is now 22-17 on the year.

Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS) earned the game one win, striking out a game-high nine batters, and giving up just one run, in the complete game victory.  She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI to lead the team offensively.  Three others had two hits on the day.

The Panthers came out strong against Berry, jumping to the 2-0 lead early.  But the Vikings regrouped after a pitching change to hold off BSC and advance to the semifinals.

The loss means the Panthers will now play the winner of the elimination game between Centre College and Sewanee.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
