MARSHALL, Texas – A late run downed No. 6 Birmingham-Southern softball Sunday night in the NCAA Division III Marshall Regional final. BSC (35-7) fell 5-4 to No. 8 Texas Lutheran to close out a historic season. Haley Crumpton (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson HS), Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS), and Bailey Murphy (Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville HS) were named to the all-tournament team for their performances this weekend.
Spencer led the team offensively, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.
Down 4-0, the Panthers rallied in the top of the third inning. With one out and two on, Kendell Hamm (Adamsville, Ala./Sumitron Christian HS) doubled to right center, sending two runs home and cutting the deficit to two. Murphy then hit a two-run homer to tie the game up.
Crumpton, who came in to pitch in the second inning, held TLU off the board until they were able to get the go-ahead run across in the sixth. BSC couldn't find an answer in the top of the seventh, sending Texas Lutheran to the Super Regionals.
The Panthers finished the season with the best win percentage in Division III program history.
