ATLANTA – The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving team traveled to compete against Emory University on Saturday, with the Panther men and women falling 163-121 and 173-111, respectively.
On the men's side, the Panthers picked up four individual wins and a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle. He also placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:48.37, just over a tenth of a second behind Emory's Henry Copses.
Junior Wil Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS) won the 100-yard butterfly and senior Caleb Riggs (Mesa, Ariz./Peninsula HS) took the win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.02. Freshman Patrick Dunne (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.76.
The women had five individual wins at the Emory meet. Freshman Rachel Sullivan (Cumming, Ga./North Forsyth HS) won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:17.06 while another freshman, Savannah Barber (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian HS) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Abby Swain (Lawrenceville, Ga./Archer HS), freshman Maddie Hosick (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) and senior Katie Kassis (Mableton, Ga./Whitefield Academy) also picked up wins. Swain won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:43.52. Hosick was the leader in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:20.01. Kassis finished the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.11 to pick up her win.
Birmingham-Southern's next meet will be next weekend on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 when the Panthers travel to face Loyola and Southwestern University.
