NEW ORLEANS – The Birmingham-Southern swimming and diving team competed against Loyola and Southwestern University on Friday and Saturday. The men swept the competition while the women split.
On the men's side, the Panthers defeated Southwestern 238 to 75 and beat Loyola 159.50 to 142.50. BSC had eight individual victories with freshman Patrick Dunne (Mobile, Ala./McGill-Toolen Catholic HS) and sophomore Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS) leading the way.
Dunne had three first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard IM. Dunne also helped BSC to second place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay, the 400-yard free relay and the 200-yard free relay.
Medina had two wins in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard fly with times of 1:45.14 and 1:59.86, respectively. Senior Wil Barton (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) and freshman Max Stoneking (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South HS) had two wins in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Senior Caleb Riggs (Mesa, Ariz./Peninsula HS) had the last of BSC's individual top finishes, placing first in the 200-yard breast stroke.
The women defeated Southwestern 196 to 115 but fell to Loyola 208 to 102. Two Panthers had individual victories on the women's side. Junior Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS) picked up the win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.17. She also helped BSC to second place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Rachel Sullivan (Cumming, Ga./North Forsyth HS) had the other Panther win in the meet. Sullivan placed first in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:17.05.
Birmingham-Southern's next meet will be against the Savannah College of Arts and Design on Saturday, Nov. 4.
