MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the competition at the Viking Classic Invitational over the weekend, earning solid meet victories as the Southern Athletic Association creeps closer.
The men's team, competing head-to-head against the host Berry College, earned 910 points to Berry's 580 points. On their way to the 330-point win, the Panthers took first in 11 events, including nine individual victories.
Sophomore Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS) captured three top finishes himself, winning the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle events.
Senior Caleb Riggs (Mesa, Ariz./Peninsula HS) also had a couple win at the meet, taking first in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke.
On the women's side, the Panthers competed against Berry and Covenant College, picking up 795 points to take the meet. BSC had a total of nine first-place finishes. Berry had 666 points and Covenant had 349 points.
Sophomore Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS), following up impressive performances in BSC's last meet against Hendrix, won three events and broke school or pool records in all three: The 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke. Erwin set the program record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.36. She set the pool records in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke with marks of 5:10.01 and 1:07.65, respectively.
Fellow sophomore Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) won two events, placing first in the 400-yard IM and the 1650-yard freestyle with times of 5:00.2 and 18:40.89, respectively.
Birmingham-Southern will travel for its next meet at Sewanee on Friday, Jan. 26 before facing Trinity University and Centre College on Sunday, Jan. 28.
