BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Southern Athletic Association rival Sewanee at the Birmingham Crossplex on Friday night.
The women's team defeated the Tigers 141-97 while the men picked up the victory by a score of 122-81.
Combined, the Panthers took first place in 14 of the 26 total events.
On the women's side, BSC started the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and piled on the points from there. They won their next four swimming events with junior Jenna Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) and freshman Anna Jordan Luth (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington HS) taking first in the 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, respectively. Senior Chelsea Chamblee (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS) won the 50-yard freestyle and freshman Jordyn Miller (Baton Rouge, La./Runnels HS) captured the 400-yard IM.
Freshman Anna Grace Pell (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) and junior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) also picked up first-place finishes with Erwin earning wins in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.
The men also started the meet off by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Nico Medina (Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS), senior Christopher Nett (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches HS), senior Wil Retersdorf (Spring Hill, Tenn./Independence HS) and sophomore Ryan Emili (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage HS) all took gold in their respective events.
Medina took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:34.77, while Nett and Retersdorf won 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly events, respectively.
Emili won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with marks of 22.39 and 48.63, respectively.
Birmingham-Southern will have a quick turnaround for its next meet on Saturday, Jan. 26 against Trinity University. The meet will be held at the Birmingham Crossplex and will serve as Senior Day for the Panthers.
