BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Six Panthers will be representing Birmingham-Southern men's track and field at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championships May 25-27 in Geneva, Ohio. The Panthers are coming off their second consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship. They qualified in hammer throw, the 100 and 200 meters, and the 4x100 relay.
"I am excited to have our student-athletes representing BSC at this year's outdoor national championships," said Head Coach Kenneth Cox. "These men have worked extremely hard and have dedicated their time to being the best in the SAA, region, and on a national level. I am proud of their commitment and they deserve this opportunity to compete next week."
BSC has had a national qualifier every year since at least 2012. This year marks the highest number of Panthers competing in the same championship in recent years.
Indoor 60 meter national champion Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) will compete in the 100, 200 and the 4x100 relay. He has the fourth fastest 100 time in the country this year and is 12th in the 200 after posting a personal record at the Kentucky Relays earlier this month. This will be his second trip to the outdoor national championships.
The 4x100 team of Watkins, Jalon Hollie (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park HS), Damian Mitchell (Maplesville, Ala./Maplesville HS), and Amir Sims (Orlando, Fla./Union Grove HS) ran the 12th fastest relay in the country at SAA Championships. Javon Jones (Mobile, Ala./Cottage Hill Christian Academy) will be joining them as an alternate on the team at nationals.
Capping off the national participants is Kameren Morgan (Bowie, Md./St. Alban's School for Boys). His toss of 56.92m in hammer throw at the University of Mobile Invitational back in April ranked him 15th nationally. It was a personal record for the sophomore.
