JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team picked up a big conference road win Friday evening, defeating Millsaps College, 59-45.
The Panthers move to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the SCAC, while the Majors fall to 18-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference.
BSC opened the game with seven straight unanswered points and would never trail. Millsaps cut the lead to one, 9-8, at the 12:04 mark, but BSC responded with nine straight points - six of those from junior Alex Adams - to go up by 10. The Panthers led 31-24 at the half, and then maintained a comfortable lead for the entire second half before eventually winning by 14.
Adams led the Panthers with 14 points, followed by junior Melanie Short with 13 and seniors Kristian Moody and Ashton Spurgin with 11 each. Short also dominated on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds, and Spurgin led with three assists.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Majors 45-29, and shot 20-of-49 (.408) from the field, 5-of-12 (.417) from three-point range, and 14-of-21 (.667) from the free throw line. BSC committed 14 turnovers to Millsaps' eight.
BSC stays on the road to face Rhodes College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Memphis.
