McLendon leads Panthers in 59-48 loss to Millsaps
JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team continued Southern Athletic Association action today on the road, falling to Millsaps, 59-48 in Jackson, Miss. The Panthers fall to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the SAA, while the Majors move to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
After going up 3-0 to start the game, BSC fell behind thanks to a 14-2 run by the Majors to pull up 14-5 by the 11:19 mark. The Panthers ended up scoring only five more points in the half, trailing 30-10 at halftime.
Millsaps maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half, with the Panthers only coming as close as 10, 50-40, at the 3:31 mark.
Junior Sydney McLendon, a junior transfer from UAH, led BSC off the bench with 14 points in only her third appearance this season. Senior Elizabeth Bromirski and sophomore Jane Romano scored 11 points each, and Bromirski led with 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year.
Velvet Johnson led the Majors with 19 points and five assists, and Miah Brooks led with 11 rebounds.
BSC shot 28.8 percent (15-52) from the field including 25 percent (5-20) from three-point range, and the Panthers shot 76.5 percent (13-17) at the free throw line. Millsaps shot better overall, hitting 40 percent (20-50) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-14) from beyond the arc, and 88.2 percent (15-17) from the line.
The Majors out-rebounded the Panthers 38-29, and rebounds were nearly even with Millsaps turning the ball over 14 times, once more than BSC.
BSC is on the road again this Tuesday, Jan. 21, stepping out of conference play to face in-state rival Huntingdon in Montgomery at 5:30 p.m.
