BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team fended off Belhaven University Saturday night in Bill Battle Coliseum as the Panthers improved to 6-5 overall with a 66-64 overtime win.
Emilee Olsen (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and Elizabeth Philpot (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) each earned double-doubles. Olsen hit a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Philpot finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Misa Fujii (Sunnyvale, Calif./Notre Dame) also picked up double-digits. She earned 12.
Both teams went back and forth down the wire in regulation. Up two after a free throw by Philpot with under 15 seconds to play. The Blazers hit a layup to tie it up and send it into overtime.
BSC scored off the tip on a fast break from Kaitlin Hogan (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) to Fujii to start overtime. Fujii extended the lead to four on a three, but Belhaven responded with a three of their own to pull within one. They had possession with 10 seconds to play and were called for a moving pick to give the Panthers the ball back.
Olsen was fouled on the inbounds. She hit the first of her free throws to push the lead to two. The Blazers grabbed the rebound when her second rimmed out and called time to advance the ball. They were able to get a shot off, but it fell short and Fujii grabbed the rebound to secure the win.
BSC opens Southern Athletic Association play at home next. They host Millsaps College on Tuesday, Jan. 2 in a doubleheader with the men's team. The women tipoff at 1 p.m. with the men following at 3 p.m.
