BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern Athletic Director Joe Dean, Jr., announced the hiring of Betty Palmer as the school's new Head Women's Golf Coach on Tuesday.
"We are very excited to have Betty Palmer lead our women's golf team here at Birmingham-Southern," Dean said. "Betty brings us a wealth of golf knowledge and experience and will be a wonderful role model for our student-athletes."
Palmer, who will begin her duties on June 1, has been an athletic administrator and coach over the last 22 years at the college and high school levels with her most notable time coming as the Head Women's Golf Coach for the University of Alabama. She led the Crimson Tide to NCAA Regional berths in seven of her last 11 years, coaching 17 seasons at the Capstone. She was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1993 and coached five All-Americans and 17 All-SEC athletes along with 34 Academic All-Americans and 87 Academic All-SEC award winners.
Following Alabama, Palmer was the Athletic Director and a history teacher at The Donoho School from 2006-2008 and most her most recent assignment came as Athletic Director, Coach and Teacher at Faith Christian both in Anniston, Ala. She served as a sales team member for Team Sports from January 2009 to July 2010 in between her time at Donoho and Faith Christian.
Palmer has been active in several organizations through the years. She was on the NCAA Golf Committee from 1995-1998, acting as the Committee Chair from 1995-1997, and she was a 17-year member of the National Golf Coaches Association that included three years on the Board of Directors.
In 1998, Palmer guided the United States golf team in the US-Japan Fuji Xerox Championship matches and she was active in the Southeastern Women's Championship from 1993-2002. Palmer was a player for Team Alabama in the Southeastern Women's Championship in 1993, 1995, 1998, 2006 and 2008, and served as a Board Member from 2000-2002.
Her community highlights include Alabama Liver Foundation Board Member (2001-2005); Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Tuscaloosa Board Member (1998-2004): LPGA/USGA Junior Girls Golf Program in Gadsden, Ala.; Coaches vs. Cancer active participant; and the Jacksonville (Ala.) Education Improvement Committee (2005-2007); and the Tuscaloosa Crossing Point Annual Golf Tournament Coordinator (2000-2004);
