BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's golf team, ranked No. 26 in the latest Golfstat.com poll, is geared up for the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Tournament in Dickson, Tenn., April 20-22.
The Panthers go into the conference tournament with three competitions under their belt, including two top five finishes.
"I feel like they're trending in the right direction heading into this tournament," said head coach Richard Schmidt. "Our last tournament was at this same course so we just got to see it. They played well there so I feel we're heading in the right direction."
BSC played in the Sewanee Invitational at the Greystone Golf Club on April 8-9, tying for fourth place. Schmidt says his team will need a repeat of that performance and a little better if they want to win the tournament.
"I think a top three finish is realistic but we want to win it," Schmidt said. "They did a good job in the last tournament of keeping the big numbers off the scorecard, so they'll have to do that again in this tournament. Seeing the course last time hopefully gives them confidence that they can do well on it."
Schmidt says the Panthers will be relying on junior Sarah Moon (Cordova, Tenn./St. George's Independent School), who tied for third at the Sewanee Invite, and freshman Emma Phillips (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood HS) to help keep scores low.
"Sarah finished well in the last tournament, and she's our most consistent golfer," he said. "We need her to kind of do what she did on that course last time."
"And Emma Phillips, this is a course that she's played many times and has a familiarity with. She played well last week and we'll need her to play well again," Schmidt added.
Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com and results will be posted on bscsports.net following the end of each round.
