BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--After giving up five goals in the first seven minutes of the game, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team lost at home to Southern Athletic Association rival Millsaps, 17-6, Saturday afternoon in Panther Stadium.
The Panthers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the SAA, while the Majors move to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Millsaps scored twice in the first three minutes, both goals by Katie Iskra, and BSC cut it to 2-1 at the 26:12 mark before the Majors scored three more in the next three minutes to go up 5-1. The Panthers answered with three straight to cut it to 5-4, but Millsaps was able to score twice in the last 2:34 of the half to lead 7-4 at halftime.
After the teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the second half, the Majors proceeded to score five straight before BSC was able to find the net again at the 12:01 mark, cutting it to 13-6. Millsaps out-scored BSC 3-1 after that, winning 16-7.
Juniors Madeline Golden and Logan Harris and freshman Amanda Amerson all scored twice for the Panthers, with Golden also recording two assists. Senior Stephanie Gore led with 12 ground balls and five caused turnovers, and freshman Shana O'Brien led with five draw controls.
JB Page led the Majors with five goals and four assists. Sarah Hawthorne picked up a game-high 14 ground balls and had six caused turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Bragg made five saves for BSC, while Millsaps goalie Madelyn Walker recorded 12 saves.
Shots were nearly even at 29-28 in favor of BSC, but the Panthers turned the ball over 42 times while Millsaps had 34 turnovers. BSC led in draw controls 13-12 and ground balls 53-50.
The Panthers are at home again this Monday, March 4, facing Reinhardt at 5 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
