Amerson leads BSC in 12-8 victory over Washington & Jefferson
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--Fueled by a game-high seven goals from freshman Amanda Amerson, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team defeated Washington and Jefferson College, 12-8, at Lake Lytal Park in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday evening.
Birmingham-Southern (4-6) tallied the first score of the match with a goal from senior Rebecca Klementz on the assist from freshman Taylor Bates, one of her team-high two assists of the contest. The two clubs were never separated by more than a single goal in the first half until Washington and Jefferson scored three unanswered goals with less than three minutes remaining in the opening half to take a 6-3 advantage into the halftime break.
The second half for the Panthers began in much the same manner as the first with BSC scoring the first goal of the half as Klementz once again found the back of the goal, with the assist this time coming from Amerson. An additional two unassisted goals from junior Logan Harris with 21:34 left in the final half pulled Birmingham-Southern even in the contest with six goals for each club. Just over a minute later an unassisted goal from Amerson gave the Panthers their first lead of the match since their 1-0 advantage early in the game.
For the next ten minutes the two schools would trade goals and find themselves engaged in a tight match with six minutes left and the score tied at 8-8. It was at the 5:19 mark when Amerson provided the offense the Panthers would need to put the match away with four straight goals, three of them unassisted.
Amerson led all players with her seven scores, while senior Stephanie Gore led with 10 ground balls and seven draw controls.
Birmingham-Southern outshot Washington and Jefferson 28-18, but Washington and Jefferson picked up more ground balls with 27 to BSC's 26.
The Panthers will return home for the final game of the regular season to face Sewanee on Saturday, April 13, at noon in Panther Stadium.
