BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-   Just finishing her final year at Birmingham-Southern as a student and an athlete on the women's lacrosse team, Jillian Montgomery (Newnan Ga./Newnan HS) is on her way to great things. After completing her degree in biology, she plans to attend graduate school and start her career in medicine as a physician's assistant.

"I would love to attend South University in Savannah, Ga.," said Montgomery. She will be the first generation of her family to attend graduate school.

Montgomery found Birmingham-Southern in a bit of a different way than some of her peers. "I went to LaGrange College my freshman year and did not have a great experience and knew that was not where I wanted to finish my four years," Montgomery said.

"My boyfriend actually went here and I would come to visit him. When I came to visit I was able to see how the student life really was and I saw that the athletics program here was much more serious, which I liked. Over the course of my freshman year I began to make friends at BSC and decided that this is where I belonged."

BSC is only a couple hours away from her hometown Peachtree City, Ga., which was also a positive factor in Montgomery's decision making process. "I have an older brother and sister. I also have two little nephews with another on the way, so it was nice to be close to them," she explained.

Thinking about family, Montgomery shared one of her favorite childhood memories about a family trip to the Keys. "When I was really little, I had to be like six years old, we took a trip to Key West, Fla.," said Montgomery.  "My brother, sister and I all got to choose one thing we wanted to do while we were there. My sister chose to swim with the dolphins and I chose to go parasailing. I still remember that trip very vividly, even though I was so little."

Over the past three years of being a Panther, Montgomery has formed a very family like bond with her teammates. "I just love our locker room atmosphere before games, just listening to music and being with each other is awesome."

Other than being a part of the 2016 regular season Southern Athletic Association championship team at BSC, Montgomery is also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the pre-PA club. During her time in the ZTA sorority, Montgomery served as Sisterhood Chair and Panhellenic Delegate, which are office positions within the chapter. "My duties for sisterhood chair were organizing events and making sure that we had a cohesive atmosphere within the sorority," she added. "And Panhellenic was more focused on recruitment and making sure everyone was being treated equally. We also focus on things we can do better to make the experience for recruitment better for both sides."
