BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team opened up the 2018 season with a 32-0 shellacking of the Huntingdon Hawks on Saturday afternoon.
The 32 goals scored by the Panthers was just two off the NCAA Division III record (Frostburg St. vs. Hood, 2001).
BSC was led by freshman Ryanne Ritter (Pelham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) who had a team-high eight goals in her collegiate debut. Ritter also had an assist, a groundball and two draw controls.
Not far behind Ritter was junior Katie Gleeson (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin HS) who scored seven goals and added three assists.
Seven other Panthers added their names to the scoresheet against Huntingdon. Senior Natalie Daniel (Ooltewah, Tenn./Baylor School) had five goals, senior Ashley Shepherd (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County HS) and junior Alyssa Gentzyel (Manassas, Va./Forest Park HS) had three each, sophomore Jade Cox (Rome, Ga./Darlington School) and freshman Mari Clair Harmon (Houston, Texas/Northland Christian HS) scored two goals, and junior Emma Holland (Diamondhead, Miss./Pass Christian HS) and freshman Rachel Fahad (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg HS) had one goal.
Junior goalie Gracie Murray (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School of Jacksonville) had a relatively quiet debut in the net as the Hawks did not attempt a shot on goal.
