BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday night, suffering a 25-10 defeat at the hands of Division II's Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
The Panthers got on the board first after junior Katie Gleeson (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin HS) beat the UAH goalie less than two minutes into the game.
The Chargers reground quickly, however, and scored five unanswered goals before BSC sophomore midfielder Jade Cox (Rome, Ga./Darlington School) put the Panthers back on the board with 19:12 to go in the first half.
Fourteen more goals would be scored before the break. Senior Natalie Daniel (Ooltewah, Tenn./Baylor School) and junior Alyssa Gentzyel (Manassas, Va./Forest Park HS) led the Panthers in the opening 30 minutes with two goals each.
At halftime, UAH led 13-8.
In the second half, the Chargers continued to pressure the Panther defense and went on to outscore BSC 12-2 in the final 30 minutes.
Daniel and senior Ashley Shepherd (Dandridge, Tenn./Jefferson County HS) scored the two BSC goals in the second half.
Junior goalie Gracie Murray (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School of Jacksonville) saw 39 shots on goal, recording 14 saves. Gentzyel led the team in groundballs and draw controls with five and nine, respectively.
Birmingham-Southern drops to 1-1 on the year with the loss. The Panthers next game will be on the road at Reinhardt on Saturday, Feb. 17.
