BSC Suffers First SAA Loss to Centre

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team suffered its first Southern Athletic Association loss of the season on Wednesday, falling to the Centre Colonels 4-1.

The match, which served as the SAA regular season championship, saw three second-half goals by Centre to push the Colonels to the win and into sole possession of first place.

The Panthers started the match in control, netting a goal in second minute. Freshman Abby Kay Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tifton County HS) headed a ball in off an assist from reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week Nicole Bernal (Odenville, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS) to give BSC the early 1-0 lead.

Centre equalized in the 19th minute with an unassisted goal from Alana Hughes. BSC and Centre would go into the halftime tied 1-1.

The second half would be a different scene from the first. The Colonels outshot the Panthers 11-2 in the final 45 minutes and scored three goals in the 48th, 61st and 87th minutes to give them the final 4-1 lead.

BSC freshman goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) finished the match with seven saves.

With the loss, Birmingham-Southern drops to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the SAA. The Panthers will travel to Millsaps for the regular season closer on Saturday, Oct. 21 before the conference championship tournament starts on Saturday, Oct. 28.
