JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team ended regular season play with a 4-1 win over Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps on Saturday night, improving its record to 14-3 on the year.
Four different Panthers scored in the game. Junior midfielder Megan Moser (Mandeville, La./St. Scholastica Catholic HS) opened up the scoring in the 31st minute to give BSC a 1-0 lead. The goal, which was earned off an assist from freshman forward Nicole Bernal (Odenville, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS), would be the difference at the half.
In the final 45 minutes, the Panthers would score their remaining three points, the first of which was an unassisted goal by freshman forward Kendall Maynard (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) in the 48th minute.
The third BSC goal of the night would belong to another freshman forward, Katherine Tucker (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy), who found the back of the net with some help from Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) in the 66th minute.
Millsaps would respond and end the shutout with a goal by Molly Ambrose in the 76th minute, but it would not be enough to get the Majors back into the game.
Birmingham-Southern's leading goal scorer, junior Taylor Andrews (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County HS), would find her 12th goal of the year in the 88th minute to put the Majors away and seal the victory for the Panthers.
In the match, the Panthers outshot the Majors 21-6 and had six corner kicks compared to just one for Millsaps.
Freshman goalkeeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) picked up the win to improve her record to 14-3. Junior keeper Katherine Kozera (Rome, Ga./Rome HS) also found time in goal and had two saves.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-1 in conference play. The SAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament is scheduled to start with the quarterfinal round on Saturday, Oct. 28. The SAA is set to release the bracket for the tournament on Sunday, Oct. 22 at noon EST.
