BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a 4-1 win over Oglethorpe on Saturday night.
Junior Taylor Andrews (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County HS), BSC's leading scorer, added to her yearly goal total finding the back of the Oglethorpe net in the 21st minute. The goal was Andrews' 13th of 2017. McKenna Boyd (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County HS) assisted on the play.
The Panthers faced a setback in the 22nd minute when freshman keeper Blakley Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic HS) was given a red card after her sliding tackle attempt missed the ball and took out an Olglethorpe player on a fast break.
Jones was ejected from the match and will miss BSC's semifinal match against Hendrix. For the remainder of the game, the Panthers played with 10 players.
Freshman forward Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) tagged on another goal in the 26th minute to give the Panthers the 3-0 lead, a lead they would take into halftime.
Early in the second half, Oglethorpe's Kayla Trice ended the BSC shutout and kept the Stormy Petrels within striking distance with a goal in the 51st minute. However, about 30 seconds after Trice's goal, freshman forward Kendall Maynard (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain HS) responded and squashed Oglethorpe's comeback attempt with the Panthers' fourth and final goal of the night.
With the 4-1 victory, Birmingham-Southern, the No. 2 seed, advances to the semifinal match of the SAA tournament and will face No. 6 seed Hendrix. The Panthers defeated the Warriors 2-1 back on Sept. 23 in their only matchup of the year.
Centre, the top seed, will host the semifinal and final rounds of the conference championship. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 3 and the final will follow on Sunday, Nov. 5.
